Bastien, virtuoso leather goods model maker-prototypist
If I love my job so much, it is because my craft is one of the few that allows me to create by mobilizing all the facets of leather goods: at Louis Vuitton, a Model Maker-Prototypist starts from a sheet of paper and ends up with a finished product, indistinguishable from the ones on display. Starting from the Designers’ drawings, which at times comprise no more than a three- quarter view and a few measurements, I translate volumes, develop patterns and templates, and assemble a first neutral model for further retouching. After all, our work is a collective endeavor, which also involves the Industialization Technicians, who are responsible for the industrialization of the products. My interpretation of the idea is inevitably a personal one, but my prototypes also complement the creativity of the Stylists – and those from Louis Vuitton have no shortage of it! I have had the chance to work on bags in the shape of boats, trucks, and even the famous plane, whose concept comes from a toy, and for which I had to devise a metal frame. I also remember the excitement of working on the trunk containing the League of Legends World Cup, the world- acclaimed video game. When I entered the Ferrandi school, I could never have imagined myself joining Louis Vuitton, where I would discover everything through my passion for leather goods! At the time, it was rare for the prototyping workshop to take on apprentices; I am proud to have been one of the first, and to have paved the way for the next generation! I have many memories of my time at 2 Rue du Pont Neuf, and the camera bag whose model confirmed my autonomy as an apprentice. I celebrated my eighteenth birthday, my wedding, and the birth of my children here. This Maison is my whole life!
Being a Virtuoso means...
Having the deep-seated conviction that anything is possible, that there are no boundaries. Perhaps this explains why I am called upon for special, slightly eccentric projects. A Virtuoso masters all the traditional skills, from refining leather with a trimming knife, to filleting, not forgetting edge dyeing, a step I am particularly fond of. Above all, it is certain that we are shattering the image of the craftsman hidden behind the doors of his workshop. Louis Vuitton is an innovative Maison full of new ideas, and I am particularly committed to the advancement of our technique through three-dimensional modeling!
